Description

Model: 32-E117

Key Features:

  • Compact design needing only 3” of mounting space with a 1” depth. Placement can be under dash, under hood, or chassis mounted.
  • IP65-rated housing: dust-tight and water-resistant construction built to survive continuous engine bay exposure to heat, humidity, and road grime, with a high-visibility LED screen for real-time monitoring at a glance.
  • True variable-speed PWM control for brushless fans: speed ramps progressively between a programmed Low Temperature Soft Start threshold and a Full Power High Temperature threshold, managing electrical demand and motor longevity across the full operating range.
  • Programmable on/off temperature thresholds for brushed fans: set the activation and deactivation temperatures precisely, with the understanding that PWM variable-speed operation applies to brushless fan motors only.
  • A/C integration input and voltage monitoring: the A/C activation input drives fans to full power whenever the compressor is active; the voltage monitoring circuit displays battery and charging system status on the LED screen.
  • Sensor-loss fail-safe: if the temperature sensor signal is interrupted, the controller defaults to keeping the fans running rather than shutting them off, protecting the engine when sensor integrity cannot be confirmed.
  • Controls multiple fans from one controller: compatible with all SPAL brushed and brushless fans and most major aftermarket electric fans, with complete wiring harness, temperature sensor, and butt splices included in the kit.

The DeWitts Digital Fan Controller (32-E117) is a programmable electric fan controller engineered for performance builds, street rods, restomods, and custom cooling systems running SPAL brushed or brushless fans, or most major aftermarket electric fans. Whether the cooling system calls for precise variable-speed airflow management with brushless fans or clean programmable on/off threshold control with brushed fans, this controller handles both fan types from a single unit, making it a genuinely versatile centerpiece for any electric fan installation.

The controller's high-visibility LED screen gives real-time feedback, and the IP65-rated housing is dust-tight and water resistant, so it holds up in an engine bay where heat, humidity, and road grime are the operating environment. These are not aesthetic features; IP65 protection means the controller continues to function accurately in conditions that would compromise a lesser unit.

For brushless fans, the 32-E117 delivers true variable-speed PWM (pulse-width modulation) control. Speed ramps progressively between a programmed Low Temperature Soft Start threshold and a Full Power High Temperature threshold, so the fan is never asked to surge from a dead stop to maximum load. This matters for brushless motor longevity and for keeping electrical demand predictable on the vehicle's charging system. For brushed fans, the controller provides programmable on/off temperature settings: the fan activates at the programmed high-temp set point and shuts off when the coolant drops back to the programmed low-temp set point. It is worth being direct about what this means for brushed fans: the PWM variable-speed signal is a brushless-only function. Brushed fan motors are not capable of true variable-speed operation from a PWM signal, and they typically require full power to deliver their rated CFM anyway. Builders running brushed fans who want genuine variable-speed airflow control should consider transitioning to a SPAL brushless fan kit rather than expecting the controller alone to achieve that result.

A/C integration is built in. A dedicated A/C activation input allows the compressor circuit to trigger the fan or fans to full power whenever the air conditioning system is active, ensuring condenser airflow is never compromised regardless of where the coolant temperature sits at that moment. Voltage monitoring provides an additional layer of system awareness, displaying battery and charging system voltage on the LED screen so any electrical issue developing in the system shows up before it becomes a cooling problem.

The sensor-loss fail-safe is the detail that separates a thoughtfully engineered controller from a basic relay setup. If the temperature sensor signal is lost for any reason, the controller does not shut the fans off and leave the engine unprotected. Instead, it defaults to a safe operating mode that keeps the fans running, which is precisely the correct response when sensor integrity is in question.

The kit ships complete with the programmable controller, wiring harness, temperature sensor, and butt splices. The temperature sensor is designed to be installed where it will read coolant temperature accurately: the thermostat housing, the intake manifold near the water outlet, the cylinder head, near the radiator inlet, or inside the upper radiator hose are all proven locations. Placement consistency matters for calibration; install the sensor in one of these locations and the programmed thresholds will reflect actual coolant temperature rather than an approximated reading.

The 32-E117 is compatible with all SPAL brushed and brushless fans in the DeWitts lineup and with most major aftermarket electric fans, making it equally appropriate for new complete builds and for upgrades to existing cooling systems. Detailed setup instruction PDFs for both brushed and brushless wiring configurations are available. SPAL's brushless fans CANNOT be activated with a relay/switch setup.  The brushless fans require a negative PWM signal, which you cannot get from a traditional fan relay kit.  If your fan controller or ECM CANNOT provide a PWM signal, then we recommend using our wiring and the 32-E117 Digital Fan Controller.

FAQ

Note: SPAL's brushless fans CANNOT be activated with a relay/switch setup.  The brushless fans require a negative PWM signal, which you cannot get from a traditional fan relay kit.  If your fan controller or ECM CANNOT provide a PWM signal, then we recommend using our wiring and #32-E117 Fan Controller

Q: What is the difference between how this controller manages brushless fans versus brushed fans?

A: For brushless fans, the 32-E117 delivers true variable-speed PWM control, ramping fan speed progressively between a programmed Low Temperature Soft Start threshold and a Full Power High Temperature threshold. For brushed fans, the controller provides programmable on/off temperature activation: the fan turns on at the set high-temp threshold and shuts off when coolant drops to the set low-temp threshold. PWM variable-speed operation is a brushless-only function; brushed fan motors are not capable of true variable-speed response from a PWM signal and typically require full voltage to reach their rated CFM.

Q: Can this controller run multiple fans at once?

A: Yes. The 32-E117 is designed to control multiple fans from a single controller, whether the system uses one or two brushless fans wired to it or a pair of brushed fans set up for simultaneous on/off activation.

Q: How does the A/C integration input work?

A: The A/C activation input accepts a positive signal from the air conditioning compressor circuit. When that signal is present, the controller drives the connected fan or fans to full power regardless of coolant temperature, ensuring condenser airflow is maintained whenever the A/C system is active.

Q: Where should the temperature sensor be installed for accurate readings?

A: The sensor should be installed in a location that reflects true coolant temperature. Proven locations include the thermostat housing, the intake manifold near the water outlet, the cylinder head, near the radiator inlet, or inside the upper radiator hose. Consistent placement in one of these locations ensures the programmed thresholds correspond to actual coolant temperature.

Q: What happens if the temperature sensor fails or loses signal while the engine is running?

A: The 32-E117 includes a sensor-loss fail-safe. If the temperature sensor signal is lost, the controller defaults to keeping the fans running rather than shutting them off. This ensures the engine remains protected even when sensor integrity cannot be confirmed.
